Incremental Training

After putting together training you are faced with a new sort of problem; “What is the right sequence of training?” It’s all too easy to drop the entire curriculum on the head of an unsuspecting employee. I can totally understand the motiviation behind this action, you want to put that hard fought information into the minds of your employees to improve performance- as fast as possible. However the results from this aren’t always favorable.

I liken this to trying to take a Pug on a marathon (that’s roughly 26 miles). They just aren’t built for that type of vigorous training and neither are your employees, at least not yet. The best way to go about training your staff is incrementally.

Here are some tips to use:

Work out the sequence

What are the training sessions or modules that your employees should go through? Work out the exact sequence that you want them to go through so you have a clear line up and a goal in mind.

Assign one course at time

Fight the urge to give your employees all of their courses at once. Studies like this one show the perils of multitasking so don’t think that giving them multiple courses at once will help them get more training done. Give them one course at time and allow them to get some decent “wins” before assigning the next module.

These are a few of the principles of incremental training.

You don’t want your employees to look like this:
